Life is short, we know that, even though we’d like it to never end. I am mesmerized at how attached people get to life, even the believers in Gods and afterlives.

Death is sure; it is the surest thing we have, and living in Venezuela one gets so familiar with death it makes that 1000-ways-of-dying TV show look ridiculous. The proximity with disaster and imminent death, even if we want to be optimistic, humbles us.

Sure, I want to live, see my kids become healthy and successful adults, see my grandkids (I have one already, who I ironically rarely see, because of the ramifications of the whole crisis we’re living in), and of course see some projects realized.

If I were granted a wish before I die that would be to see my country free of this nightmare called bolivarian revolution (yes, with small letters).

For those of you not familiar with the Venezuelan crisis, think about the worst apocalyptic nightmare you can have, mix it with the worst economic debacle in history, add the stinkiest, most bizarre political conspiracy theories, combine it with the filthiest heist thriller, and put in a bottomless pit of cultural erasure. That would be close to what is happening to us.

I go to bed every day thinking of ways I can help my country. I wake up every day hoping to find out that something happened and Maduro and his cronies are gone for good.

Venezuela was looted (the corruption scandals are finally coming out), all its institutions corrupted and ruined, all its traditions stolen by a crisis that prevents you from simple things such as celebrating our children’s birthdays, millions of people sent into exile, hundreds of thousands of lives lost to crime and the most cynical and cruelest apathy any group of politicians has ever shown. In short, my country and the future of my generation and that of my children, has been turned upside down.

Thus, if I were to die, my only wish would be that Venezuela would be freed from this nightmare, that a decent generation of politicians, fully aware of the historical challenge and responsibility of reconstructing a beautiful and rich country would be up to the task, that my fellow countrymen and women learned the lessons and become more critical and proactive about political and citizenry participation, being more responsible in the raising of their children and in the cultivation of their intellects, so that my children and their children could live and enjoy fruitful and meaningful lives, a life of prosperity in a country that has everything to be great.
