Though not always noisy, it is all around. Most of it is surface, almost innocuous. "I'm on my way" when someone hasn't even left. a smirk masking annoyance. One made only to prevent a fight. Though they develop a habit, these items don't sound like major falsehoods.

People lie for several causes. Other times it is terror. Worry about consequences, anxiety about losing anything, worry of being viewed differently. Sometimes it's merely convenience. The truth can be difficult, chaotic, and distressing; a lie can be quick and neat. Thus people select whatever feels most convenient right now.

However, it comes at a subdued price. The more lying becomes normal, the more difficult it is to separate fact from fiction. Trust starts to erode progressively, not all at once. You start doubting events you once took for granted. Words get smaller. Because it is present in the same space as everything else, even honesty begins to sound dubious.

There is also the sort of self-deception one uses. That one sinks deeper. Persuading yourself you are okay when you are not. Ignoring matters needing attention. When it clearly matters, acting something does not matter.

And possibly the fundamental problem is how usual lying has grown rather than that it exists.
