Last week I launched my own hive witness node to support the network. The witness is now up and running nicely and signing blocks regularly. In the process of setting up and managing the node I got more interested in witness voting and witness voting behaviour of Hive users. In the end, when running a witness, one needs to get some votes.

Witness Votes and Witness Ranking TL;DR

As you know every user can cast their vote for a total of 30 witnesses they would like to support. Your votes are weighted by the amount of hive you have powered up and do not cost you anything. The witnesses in the network are ordered by the sum of all the weighted votes they receive. E.g., a witness receiving 10 votes of 10HP accounts will get listed lower on the witness ranking than a witness receiving just one vote by an account staking 10K HP. The witness ranking determines how often a witness is assigned to sign a block. Every 63 seconds the top 20 witnesses plus a randomly selected witness outside the top 20 get to sign a block and receive a reward for it in form of HP. The higher up on the rank, the more often a witness will get to sign blocks and thus increase revenue through witness payout. Hence by using your vote, you can exert influence on which of the witnesses get to sign the blocks.

Additionally, witnesses can set certain parameters for which consensus is needed. A good example is the interest rate on HBD savings. Hence by voting on witnesses with your desired interest, you have an influence on what this interest rate is. For example, the image below shows the interest rates of the top 10 witnesses. You can also see the number of votes in HP the witnesses have and the last block they have signed.

These last signed block gets me to the important topic of this post and that is keeping your votes up to date! Some witnesses are no longer producing blocks, yet still get a large sum of the votes.

Regular Review of Casted Votes

While users typically cast their votes, keeping them up to date is something else. In researching voting behaviour I noticed that many users are voting for witness that are no longer active (i.e., stale). A good example is the recently discontinued witness @steempress. While this witness is no longer signing blocks, it still receives a large portion of votes. These votes, you guessed it, are simply wasted.

Ain't Nobody Got Time for That

If you don't want to evaluate your votes regularly yourself, or simply just don't find the time, there's an easy way to get out of it. The way out is through proxy voting. The basic concept is that you simply let another user decide. By setting a proxy account, you will automatically vote the same witnesses as the proxy account you have set.

By going to the bottom of #ecency's witnesses page you can set or remove a proxy account of your liking very easily (feel free to add me if you like what I do :)).

If you do actually want to cast votes yourself, of course it is nice to get reminded once in a while. Therefore, I took the liberty to retrieve a list of users voting for the highest ranked stale witnesses and collected them here. What this means in short is that if you are mentioned in this post you should review your votes. The primersion witnesses page gives you a clean summary of your votes categorised by used, unused, and stale votes. I recommend checking it out and update accordingly!

Votes Getting Wasted

The top 3 highest ranked stale witnesses account for a total of about 47.8 million HP. This this VP is comming from 5534 users. A lot of wasted votes if you ask me. It's easy to see why reviewing your votes is not a bad thing to do! Below you see some of the top three witness stats. The corresponding users casting a vote are listed at the end of this post.
