🐝 Introducing Hive Keeper

A simpler, independent Hive wallet extension

The Hive ecosystem continues to grow and evolve.
Wallets expand, features increase, and new directions emerge.

So we asked a simple question:

What would a focused, Hive-only wallet extension look like today?

Today, we’re introducing Hive Keeper - a lightweight, independent, privacy-first Hive wallet built for simplicity, reliability, and long-term sustainability.

🌱 Why Hive Keeper exists

Hive Keychain has been a foundational tool in the Hive ecosystem and continues to evolve - including exploring multichain capabilities and additional services.

Hive Keeper takes a different approach:

πŸ‘‰ Stay 100% Hive-focused
πŸ‘‰ Minimize external dependencies
πŸ‘‰ Prioritize simplicity and transparency

This isn’t about replacing existing tools - it’s about offering an alternative philosophy for those who prefer a more minimal and self-contained experience.

⚑ What makes Hive Keeper different

🧩 No backend. No middlemen. Just Hive.

Hive Keeper is designed to operate without reliance on external backend services.

  • No proxy APIs

  • No centralized swap services

  • No WebSocket infrastructure

  • No third-party notification systems

Everything works directly with:

  • Hive public RPC nodes

  • Hive Engine RPC

Result:
πŸ‘‰ More transparent behavior
πŸ‘‰ Fewer external points of failure
πŸ‘‰ Closer alignment with Hive’s decentralized design

πŸ” On-chain first approach

Where possible, Hive Keeper favors direct on-chain interactions:

  • Swaps β†’ Hive internal market + Hive Engine DEX

  • Blockchain data β†’ direct RPC calls

  • Prices β†’ direct from Coingecko API (no proxy layer)

No intermediary services. No escrow layer.

🧼 Simplicity by design

Hive Keeper intentionally keeps scope narrow by avoiding features that require additional infrastructure or complexity:

  • No multichain / EVM integrations

  • No backend-mediated swaps

  • No multisig server layer

  • No analytics or tracking

  • No fiat on-ramp integrations

  • No external notification dependencies

Focus:
πŸ‘‰ Clean, predictable wallet experience
πŸ‘‰ Easier maintenance and long-term stability

🧠 Unified Extension Protocol (window.hive)

One of the key improvements introduced with Hive Keeper is a step toward standardization.

Today, different Hive wallets expose different globals:

  • window.hive_keychain

  • window.peakvault

  • etc.

This creates additional work for developers.

βœ… Hive Keeper introduces:

window.hive - a unified wallet/extension interface

Inspired by similar standards in other ecosystems, this approach aims to improve:

πŸ‘‰ Developer experience
πŸ‘‰ dApp compatibility
πŸ‘‰ Multi-wallet coexistence

Hive Keeper implements this today, with the intention to collaborate and explore broader ecosystem adoption over time. We have submitted PR to both Keychain and Vault extensions, hope they will accept unified approach and make easier integration for dapp developers.

Vault PR: https://gitlab.com/peakd/peak-vault/-/merge_requests/42

🎨 A fresh identity

Hive Keeper also introduces a new visual and user experience:

  • 🐝 Animated bee mascot

  • ✨ Gold-themed UI (#f7c737)

  • 🌍 Ecosystem discovery page

  • πŸ’± Exchange links for acquiring HIVE

  • 🧭 Streamlined onboarding

πŸ› οΈ Under the hood

This fork also focuses on reducing complexity:

  • ~25,000 lines of code removed

  • Significant cleanup of legacy and unused components

  • Reduced dependency footprint

  • Improved MV3 compatibility

  • No telemetry or tracking

Outcome:
πŸ‘‰ Leaner codebase
πŸ‘‰ Easier to maintain
πŸ‘‰ Privacy-first by default

πŸ”„ What stays the same

All essential Hive wallet functionality is preserved:

  • Account and key management

  • Transfers and savings

  • Power up / power down

  • Delegations and RC management

  • Hive Engine token support

  • Governance participation

  • Ledger hardware wallet support

  • HiveAuth integration

  • dApp transaction signing

πŸ‘‰ The goal is to simplify - not reduce capability

πŸš€ The vision

Hive Keeper is not a replacement - it’s an alternative.

A wallet that is
independent, minimal, and fully focused on Hive

Different tools can serve different needs - and that diversity strengthens the ecosystem.

buenisima propuesta. esta herramientas fortalece a Hive, y tener una alternativa enfocada 100% en el ecosistema, sin rastreo, es un paso adelante en seguridad.

I think that to be fully independent, you need to drop the coingecko dependency. I don't care what my portfolio is in dollars. I even struggle to care about it in Β£GBP. But if you could give me the value of my tokens in HIVE, that would be really meaningful. Ie, how much HIVE would I get if I swapped all my tokens now.

Then you will be fully focused on Hive.

Coingecko is to see fiat value... you are right, we can remove that as well and show value in hbd instead. Good catch

Is there any plans to create Hive keeper mobile app?

No plans for mobile app, we have Ecency app for that already... New release of Ecency app will give more context πŸ˜‰

That's so good news. I love the project. There will be an Android Hive Keeper app?

No plans for separate mobile app, our Ecency app will be able to do everything

Prices β†’ direct from Coingecko API (no proxy layer)

One thing that doesn't help us at all is displaying the HBD price from Coingeko, for example. It's an unrealistic price, based on a single exchange that lacks liquidity and where most people don't trade and don't have access. We need dapps to stop relying on Coingeko and instead display the HBD price calculated using HIVE on the internal market.

Excellent, friends at Ecency, I'll be checking it out. Can I convert HBD to Hive and Hive to HBD?

Just found this accidentally and give it a try. It looks almost similar to Keychain so using it will be no problem.

Yes, it is same only leaner without extra dependencies and few fixes. There pending update that will make it even more leaner and faster, we expect chrome update to be ready later today or tomorrow. Firefox extension still in review.
